About Us

The Hollywood Buddhist Church was founded in 1915 by Senji Hara and was affectionately called “HARA-SAN NO BUKKYOKAI” after its beloved leader. From its humble beginnings behind a Japanese grocery store over 97 years ago, the Hollywood Buddhist Church has persevered through the Depression years and WWII, and proudly stands with some of its oldest members still in attendance for Sunday service. As a branch of the Los Angeles Hompa Hongwanji Buddhist Temple (also referred as the L.A. Betsuin), the Hollywood Buddhist Temple continues its longstanding influence and presence within the Japanese-American community.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to new members and visitors to join us for service. Please check our latest schedule of events below.

Family services are held about once a month, officiated by a reverend from the L.A. Betsuin.
